JOB DESCRIPTION:

The job of the HVAC Control Specialist is to maintain and modify heating/air conditioning and/or refrigeration systems; identify repair/replacement needs necessary to maintain equipment and systems; provide necessary information on the proper uses of the equipment; ensure adequate materials are available to maintain existing systems and to complete work assignments in a timely manner. The incumbent is responsible for managing the District's Energy Control Program. The incumbent will work in a technical capacity and will exercise considerable independent judgment in carrying out assigned tasks and responsibility. Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of ventilation, heating and air conditioning units installed in the UMHA’s buildings and facilities. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES (Illustrative only):

  • Coordinates with requesting department and other trades for the purpose of completing projects/work orders efficiently.
  • Diagnoses malfunctions of heating/air conditioning/refrigeration systems and/or components for the purpose of identifying repair/replacement needs necessary to maintain equipment and systems; Installs, maintains, and repairs hearing/air conditioning/refrigeration systems and related equipment (e.g. unit heaters, pumps, safety controls, etc.);
  • Monitors, inspects, and where appropriate repair various items, systems and/or components (e.g. refrigerators, air conditioning units, heating units, etc.) to ensure continued proper operation and for the purpose of providing renovation and preventive maintenance of heating/air conditioning and refrigeration systems;
  • Troubleshoots and maintain all forced draft and hot water heating systems;
  • Maintains accurate maintenance records as required by the District, State, and EPA, including records of time and cost for each project; Checks and changes air filters on a regular basis;
  • Assess drain problems and perform any needed repairs;
  • Maintains tools, supplies and/or equipment (e.g. torches, cutters, drills, sheet metal, filters, control components, fan blades, gaskets, seals, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of items and equipment is in safe operating condition; Prepares documentation for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information;
  • Request equipment and supplies for the purpose of maintaining and ensuring availability of required items;
  • Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns; Transports various items (e.g. tools, equipment, supplies, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials required at a job site.
  • Ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

(A)    Associate's Degree with specialization in heating and air conditioning, heating and cooling, heating and refrigeration technology or a closely related field and three (3) years of experience troubleshooting and the operation and maintenance of HVAC equipment In large scale buildings; OR

(B)          Graduation from Trade School with a Certificate in Heating and Air Conditioning and five (5) years experience as a journeyman tradesman; OR

(C)        An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.

(D)          Must possess a valid NYS Drivers License at the time of appointment. Must maintain a valid NYS Drivers License throughout employment.
