Who Was Dan Daniels?

Dan Daniels Jr. was more than a dedicated team member of the Utica Municipal Housing Authority (now “People First”) — he was a driving force of the organization for 30 years. Working in the Modernization Department, Dan was known for being larger than life and making everyone feel welcomed and part of our community. He truly embodied People First’s values and mission.

His legacy lives on through The Dan Daniels Memorial Scholarship Award.

Who Can Apply?

The Dan Daniels Memorial Scholarship is for:

  • High school seniors graduating in 2025
  • Students currently living in one of People First's residential sites
  • Students continuing on to college

How to Apply

The application process is straightforward:

  1. Complete the Application Form. Visit this page to start the process.

  2. Include Required Details. When applying, include your name, address, phone number, current high school name, and guidance counselor’s name.

  3. Write a Short Essay. In 250 to 500 words, write an essay on this topic:

    “Describe a significant challenge you've faced. How did overcoming this challenge shape your goals for the future?”

  4. Convert your essay into a Microsoft Word or PDF file.

  5. Submit by April 18th, 2025. Submit your application and essay file as one email to SPenge@PeopleFirstNy.Org no later than April 18th!

  6. Community Service. Volunteer a minimum of three (3) hours at a People First-sponsored event as determined by People First. Further instructions on volunteer-eligible events will follow.

  7. Graduate. Successfully graduate from your high school, as verified by the school administration.

  • Proofread everything. Have a teacher, counselor, or mentor review your application and essay for grammar and clarity.
